This project restored and expanded a 1901 Victorian home in a historical neighborhood. The owners had lived in the home for seven years, and while they wanted to preserve the home’s appearance and its registry as a historic landmark, the current size of their family was placing a strain on the original living spaces.

The owners went to Remodelers of Houston, formerly known as William Shaw & Associates, with rough floor plans and a definite set of objectives: a larger family room and kitchen, a new master suite, and more room for their three children. To meet the clients’ requirements, the company made plans to repair the original structure, remove an existing addition and add a blended two-story addition and a garage — all while preserving and enhancing the home’s historic character.

After repairs to the original foundation were made and the old addition was torn down, a large, two-story rear addition was added, making room for all of the clients’ objectives. The rear addition increased the home’s size by 1,000 sq. ft. Replacing the garage offered another opportunity for increasing the family’s living space. A new multipurpose room on the second floor of the garage offers the children a large room for recreation and is conveniently connected to the kitchen by a stairway.

The final touch to the home was a covered, wrap-around porch at the rear and side of the home. This porch adds needed entertainment space and contributes to the historic charm of the home. Shaw and team did an outstanding job of merging historically sensitive design in a harmonious graceful exterior that is consistent with the home’s exterior.

Master Design Award judges gave the project very high marks. “The home really looks great and fits together well with the original style and improves it nicely.” Another judge attested to the cost versus value of the project. “It is really a great value for the investment.”
